Halliday Wine Companion 2022

St Hugo Signature Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

95 Points - Outstanding

'Every vintage of our iconic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has been awarded Gold since 1980, and this year was no exception. With its 18 months in French Oak, and notes of blueberries and cocoa, it is easy to see why this wine has been described as 'a quintessential St Hugo of might and poise'. - Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Cabernet Shiraz 2018

95 Points - Outstanding

'60/40% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. 58/42% Coonawarra/Barossa Valley. Matured 18 months in (58% new) oak barrels (French, American and a little Hungarian). Barossa shiraz serves to both build and tone Coonawarra cabernet, united seamlessly in a tightly coiled structure of great promise. Crunchy, focused, compact black fruits are intricately supported by a multicultural mix of oak, laying out a long finish of high-cocoa dark chocolate and coffee bean. A cellaring special.' - Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Barossa Shiraz 2018

95 Points - Outstanding

'Matured 18 months in (55% new) 90/10% French/American oak barrels. An impressive vintage for St Hugo, leading out with a full, vibrant purple hue. A deep, compact yet bright core of crunchy blackberries, black cherries and satsuma plum hails a great vintage in the Barossa. High-cocoa dark chocolate French oak has been strategically and expertly deployed for long-term endurance. Impressive promise.' - Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Riesling 2020

92 Points

'Selection of the best parcels from 2 blocks. The fanatical attentiveness of the JC team is more pertinent than ever in suppressing phenolic grip in the small, dry 2020 harvest – though even their superpowers have been put to the test here. Boasting a bright, pale straw-green hue, this is a tightly coiled riesling of tension and precision. Granny Smith apple fruit defines a dry finish of enduring acidity and some firm phenolic grip.' - Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2019

90 Points

'72% grenache (70–90yo vines), 22% shiraz (majority 98yo vines), 6% mataro. Partial whole-bunch fermentation for shiraz and grenache; partial extended post-ferment maceration of grenache for 60 days in an oak vat. Matured 8 months in 100% old French oak hogsheads and puncheons. Vibrant, medium purple hue. A seamlessly assembled blend in which the dark fruits and spice of old-vine grenache assume a confident lead, albeit without the lift or definition of the great seasons. Finely textured tannins direct a finish of medium persistence.' - Tyson Stelzer

The Real Review

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Chardonnay 2018

Light to mid-yellow colour, bright and fresh, the bouquet strong on charred oak and artifacts, some smoky crushed-rock notes. It's light to medium-bodied and fairly straightforwrad in the mouth, falling away rather quickly at the finish. What's there is attractive. A good wine in a finer, subtler style which will reward a little cellar time.

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Riesling 2018

Pale yellow colour with a healthy tinge of green. Finger limes, lemon zest, and a soft tease of musk. This is intense and focused - still settling into the bottle. Full of vim and bracing acidity, a bitter grip takes hold on the finish. It needs time to soften.

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Riesling 2018

Lavender, lime, apple and pear perfume with hints of lemon and white flowers; long, taut and finely chalky. with bright zesty acids and a lingering lemon/lime finish. Long and crunchy.

St Hugo Signature Collection Coonawarra Barossa Cabernet Shiraz 2015

Laced with peppermint and dried herbs; intense cassis, blackberries, mulberries and dark plums with cedar/vanilla oak and fine, pliant tannins. Long and polished, cedary and tight-grained; too minty for a higher rating.

St Hugo Signature Collection Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

A core of blackcurrant fruit density is beautifully structured with finely structured, confident tannins that promise great potential. Very long-lingering black fruits of crunchy blackcurrant definition are supported by well-poised acid and well-judged dark chocolate oak. A great St Hugo that articulates a benchmark Coonawarra season.

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Riesling 2017

If the goal of the riesling wizards was to create a stir with the first release of this new, limited production label, they ve certainly exceeded their aspirations. A gorgeously fragrant, signature Eden Valley riesling that h8rkg back to the classic days of finest rieslings. Enduring acid line and finely structured mineral texture hover long on the finish.

St Hugo Signature Collection Eden Valley Riesling 2018

Pale straw with a pretty luminescent green tint, this is a wine that rises above the ripe, phenolic grip that dogged the 2018 season in Eden Valley, ascending to a plane of tension, purity and endurance. It's a tightly coiled and reticent, clutching its taut lemon and granny smith apple fruit close, laced with clove spice, honed with a razor line of focused yet ripe acidity that beckons for time to unwind.

St Hugo Signature Collection Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A wealth of sweet, ripe cassis and dark cherries. Plenty of leaves, mint and herbs, too. Everything is dialed right up. Chocolate, berry compote, dark cherries, plums, mocha and vanilla drive, all bold on the palate. This has plenty of depth and power. Screw cap. Drink in 2020 or hold.

St Hugo Signature Collection Barossa Cabernet Shiraz 2015

This blend has been made famous by a number of wineries over many decades. This one leads with distinctive Coonawarra cabernet and the minted cassis fruits. It is strongly herbal on the nose. The palate speaks more of the shiraz with some decent flesh and depth. Bathed in sweet oak, the wine closes with chocolate. Quite the classic. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
